How to Best Get Rid of Concrete Stains…

One major downfall to concrete is that it can stain easily. Just like carpet, you will want to remove stains from concrete as soon as you can. This will help to keep the stain from becoming permanent. We would like to give you a few tips on how to remove those surface stains and get your concrete back to looking brand new.

Attack Stains As Soon As Possible

Soak up the fluids that have spilled as soon as possible. Concrete stains are common because concrete is a porous material. Liquid spills are much easier to remove before they’ve had a chance to soak in. The quicker you act, the easier it will be to remove the stain. If it is a simple spill… soak up with paper towels. Kitty litter is great for soaking up liquid such as oil that you do not want to touch. Only pat the fluid so you don’t wipe in the stain in or spread it even further.

Using Paint Strippers and Solvents to Remove Stains

You will want to remove all stains before you seal your concrete. If the stains are from gum, oils, fats, or silicon you will need a solution of acetone, a degreaser or mentholated spirits. The solution you use will be determined by the stain you are trying to remove. If you are doing this yourselves be sure and pat do not rub the solution in as this can spread the stain. Cover the stain for about 20 minutes. Now is the time to use the pressure washer on the concrete, it will get rid of the cleaner and the stain.

What You Need to Know About Sealing Concrete

Sealer protects concrete from the elements and makes it easier to clean off deicing salts, oil or grease. But you need to apply it properly. If your concrete is new, you’ll need to let it cure — wait at least one month before applying sealer. Before applying, check the weather. Sealer needs to be applied in dry conditions because it won’t adhere to damp concrete. The temperature also needs to stay above 50°F during application and drying time (up to three days).
