Pressure Washer Buying Guide – #2 Selecting an Affordable Commercial Pressure Washing Unit

ZEIt’s always a better option to use a pressure washer than a water hose to get your patio or car clean because a garden hose pushes only 40 Pounds per Square Inch (PSI) and a commercial pressure washer can push 1,000-4,000 PSI depending how much you want to spend.

What to Expect from an Affordable Commercial Unit

  • Price Range – $100 to $1,100
  • Pounds per Square Inch (PSI) – 1,300 to 1,400
  • Gallons per Minute (GPM) – 1.2 to 4 GPM
  • Water Type – Cold only
  • Power Type – Gas Or Electric

What to Expect from Gas or Electric

  • Gas – Expect a PSI of 2200 to 4000 with a GPM of 2.1 to 4. Prices start from $250 and upwards.
  • Electric – Expect a PSI of 1300 to 2500 and a GPM of 1.3 to 1.8. Prices start from $100 and upwards.

Do You Want a Detergent Tank?

There will be room for detergent tanks on larger electric and gas power washers. Detergent takes are nice because you won’t have to spread detergent manually before using the washer when you have one. Detergents will be needed to get out tough stains.

What Kind of Pump Should You Get?

There are two types of pressure washer pumps; a axial (wobble) pump and a triplex pump. Axial pumps are mainly seen on less expensive models that can handle 60-100 hours of use. Triplex pumps last much longer, are replaceable, and push higher PSI and GPM.

Different Types of Spray Tips

Having different types of spray tips on hand are very helpful because they allow you to choose different sprays of water for different types of  cleaning. Example: If you want to mix detergent you’d go with a wider spray tip. If you wanted to removed mold you’d choose a concentrated jet tip.

  • Zero Degree – Colored red, it projects a concentrated jet of water.
  • 15 Degree – Colored yellow, it is for high performance.
  • 25 Degree – Colored Green and can be used for variety of applications.
  • 40 Degree – Colored white and is only for sensitive surfaces.
  • 65 Degree – Colored Black and for detergent mixed low pressure applications.
